Update on Finding Periodicals

whats up with periodicals

As you all know, the Periodicals Service Desk has been disbanded. Have you checked out the second floor? It's a nice big space for study now!

Because of the change, we at the Reference Desk need to step up our service to patrons looking for Periodicals.

Here's some information about helping patrons find Periodicals:

• Directing someone to the second floor usually isn't enough. You should offer to go with him or her up there. But first, check the holdings if s/he is looking for a specific year or issue.

• Check Journal Finder to find out what the library owns. Journal Finder will tell you what we have electronically and what is physically in the library.

• If you don't get a hit for a title when you search Journal Finder, search again by title in Ignacio.

• When looking at the Journal Finder or Ignacio results, scrutinize the date ranges to determine whether the year or issue the patron is looking for is available.

periodicals date ranges

• For Periodicals physically in the library, they are still shelved alphabetically by title. Recent newspapers are shelved at the beginning of the Periodicals section (next to the new study area), and bound and unbound journals and magazines follow.

• Microfilm (rolls) and microfiche (contact slides) have been moved to the lower level of the library, and are accessible by library staff only. If a patron needs an article or document from our microfilm or microfiche collection, instruct them to fill out a request in Illiad (Interlibrary Loan). If a patron wants to browse the roll or fiche, instruct them to fill out a Meet with a Librarian request form, and a library staff person will retrieve the roll or fiche and help the patron use the scanning machine with it.

Have you helped any patrons looking for periodicals this semester? If so, how did it go?
