Perhaps you guys have noticed something called "Encore" on the library homepage. We call it our "new style catalog."

I don't want to explain anything or say too much -- try it out and let's talk about it in this blog post. Leave your comments about your experience with Encore, and come back later to read your coworkers' comments... we may agree/disagree/learn something new from each other.

I like Encore, i like how it clearly categorizes the results on the left side column which helps you narrow your search and it gives you a lot of other keyword search ideas too, very helpful!

yes, i like the defining options on the left side too. it is easier to use those than "modify search" in the old catalog, where you had to go to a separate page and not many people knew about it

I liked Encore too. The Refine by Tag thing on the right hand side of the screen seems like it would be helpful. The layout is a little different but doesn't really look too much more modern than the old one. I like how it shows you the book covers too.

well just for the record, book covers show up in the old Ignacio too! :-)

I liked encore as well. It is more user-friendly by having numerous links on the borders(tags link+, images). the little image of the book cover is also a nice addition. -Jeremy

I like it. Easy to use, and I like it gives some images on the right column. Um... Can we search by call numbers in Encore?

great question!

encore is ONLY keyword searching -- like google -- and that is the main difference in its functionality.

to do any other searches (title, call number, author), you have to use the old catalog

I found Encore useful
I searched poetry and it came up with a lot of hits & even suggestions to the side
I then searched poetry in Ignacio and it came up with pretty much the same results
How is encore different?

oh I like it a lot more now that I've dived a little deeper
there are summaries and reviews of the books

good point, about the summaries and reviews, although we had that in the past, it was not as easy to access, and i am not sure if what's in encore comes from the same source as what's in the old catalog

the way i see it, i would have to say these are the main differences between encore and the old Ignacio:

1. encore is only keyword searching (the idea is it caters to the "google generation"). to do more advanced searching, like title, author, call number, and subject heading, you have to search in the old catalog. i am a big fan of very exact searches, especially if you are looking for a particular book by a particular author

2. encore has tags. this means you can add tags to the record of any book if you log into your record. when encore searches the catalog, it searches the tags too. the old Ignacio DOES NOT SEARCH TAGS, so your results may be different

3. interface. encore is suppose to be more like amazon.com or other e-commerce websites. do you think it's easier to use? i like the stuff that comes up on the left and right, but the center of the page -- the results -- is a little muddy compared to the old ignacio in my humble opinion

I talked to a few librarians about it and after talking to them I think that it'll be a little better once things other than the catalog are added to it and it gets tweaked here and there. I think if I was going to look for a book I'd still use the new(old) Ignacio catalog but I could see other people taking a liking to Encore instead. I think it's easier on the eyes too.

indeed, there are definitely some details to iron out still, like online full text linking and paging options for faculty and staff. stay tuned!

randy showed me sneak peak before it came out on Ignacio, I liked it, but thought it was kinda weird in the middle, the left and right side are a-ok. i will still be using the usual Ignacio search and if I want to let or if having trouble finding sources I will go to Encore.
