Hi everyone,

There have been cases of "disappearing print jobs" since the new Xerox machines were installed last week. Please keep reading for ways to diagnose and troubleshoot them:

Problem:

A student was having problems printing (he was charged for his print job, but nothing came out), and I noticed that there is a banner message on the Xerox log-in screen that says:

Immediate Job Overwrite Failed. Perform an On Demand Overwrite immediately. One or more queued jobs need resources.

Solution:

I think this happens with PDFs sent from Preview on the Macs. For some reason the computer/program sends the job requiring a specific type of paper that the machine doesn't have. I am working with ITS and MRC Xerox to address the problem (they think it's a problem with the drivers that were installed, to which I responded: but ITS installed the drivers!).

In my testing, the same PDFs that disappeared when sent from the computer printed successfully from the USB memory stick.

I think the work around is to resort to the trick of printing PDFs from a USB memory stick. If you encounter this problem, I recommend taking the following steps:

1) Loan the student one of our USB memory sticks to put their PDFs on (if s/he doesn't have one of their own)
2) Have the student try printing from the USB directly in the machine.
3) Give the student a contact sheet, "Get help with Pharos," so they can get refunded/courtesy prints from MRC Xerox/Purchasing
