Patrons Harassing Other Patrons

As you all know, we have a little bit of history dealing with patrons harassing other patrons in the library. I have given you instructions and advice in the past, but I want to emphasize your duty in a situation.

--> IF you notice a patron harassing another patron (harassing equals anything that makes the the victim feel uncomfortable),
or
--> IF a patron reports being harassed by another patron to you,
or
--> IF you are being harassed
Then you are obligated to do the following:

• Recommend a public safety escort to the victim. Help s/he arrange it if necessary
• Recommend that the victim file a complain with the student conduct board: 415-422-5334. They are located in UC 411 (SE side). Ryan Garcia is the main contact person although Annmarie Galeucia will usually answer the phone
• Recommend that the victim contact Char Lobo, the main intake officer for these type of situations, to report the incident. She's in Gleeson Library, in student disability services on the lower level room 20. 415-422-6841. lobo@usfca.edu. She is more than happy to meet with students and talk to them.
• Immediately report it to a full time staff member in the library. If you are working a shift by yourself, this involves going to the circulation desk and asking to speak to a staff person.

When I say "recommend" above, I mean write down these contact people and give that to the student. Make it as easy for them as possible to report the incident. Be encouraging and sympathetic, and don't assume it's a non serious situation. We must exercise extreme caution.

This is very important because often a single victim brushes off a disturbing encounter thinking it is an isolated incident. Little do they know many many other students may also be experiencing similar harassment. You have an advantage in that you have institutional memory and may recognize repeat offenders or the "usual suspects." You need to use your advantage to best serve and protect the members of the USF Community.

Let me know if you have any questions.

EDIT: Kelci has made a quick reference sheet with the phone numbers of the above people so you can easily hand it out to a person who has been harassed. They are located in the front pocket of the student manual (the blue binder).
